I sucessfully installed Photosmart P1000 with driver HP Desk Jet 970Cse to Windows 7 by following your steps Part I and Part II; steps I  found at suport- amlabels -for moving unspecified item to the printer list.

Note:  When I used HP Desk Jet 990C do not use  it connected the printer to the computer but would send paper through without printing- DJ970Cse worked perfectly for me.

Here s the whole process Part I, Part II, Part III.

Note In part II I wasn t able to find the correct driver because I wasn t able to do windows update from there.  There may be an easier way to do this, but this worked:

Part I:  to enable windows update

1. Go to devices and printers,

4. Click windows update to load more drivers -after loaded - Click HP not Hewlett-Packard spelled out and then clickDesk Jet 970Cse

5.  Following  all the directions through to finish not alarmed that the test print doesn t work- this step is solely for the windows update to register for Part II- later you will uninstall this useless printer.

A problem that can be encountered when installing your label printer on the Windows 7 operating system is that it will place it in the unspecified devices list, even after you believe you have installed the drivers correctly.

Now to remove it from the unspecified list, please follow these quick steps:From the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon  , right-click Computer, and then click Manage. The Computer Management window opens.Click Device Manager in the left pane of the Computer Management window under System Tools. A list of installed devices displays in the right pane of the Computer Management window.Right-click your product in the Other devices list, and then click Update Driver Software. A dialog box opens to locate the driver software.Click Browse my computer for driver software. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, and then click Next. The Add Printer Wizard opens.Under Manufacturer in the Install the printer driver window, click on your manufacturer. Under Printers, select the alternate driver for the product listed in the table in the step to Determine the appropriate compatible driver , and then click Next. An Update Driver Warning window opens.Click Yes to continue the driver installation.Pull up a document to print and select HP Desk Jet 970 Cse copy 1.   It should print color and black. Go to Part III to delete first printer installed.

Your device will now be completely installed and ready to use.

1.  Cancel test print from the first printer installed HP Desk Jet 970 Cse

2. Uninstall HP Desk Jet 970 Cse   Do not uninstall Copy 1

3.  Copy 1 will replace the uninstalled printer.

I hope you have sucess quicker than I did- it took me two hours to finally combine these two processes and then I also had to restore my computer to an earlier version to start fresh after intalling HP JD 990C.

Just  been  having  the   same  problem  with   win  7   6bit ,   after  a  pc   rebuild.

I  have  a   solution  which  has   worked   for  me  .

I  had  a   similar   problem   with   vista   and  the  photo   smat 1000 ,   and  my  old   fix  seems  to   work  hear  too

It   appears  that  the  drivers   for    the   desk  jet  1200c    double  up  as  a   stable   drive   for   windows  7   and   vista   for  the  photosmart.

I  run   both  types  of   printer ,   the   1220c   worked   first  time  on   win   7   and   didn t  raise   and  issues  ,   but   across my  network  ,   to  my  older  kit ,   the   usual  no drivers   error.

But  I   just  installed  the   1220c  drivers ,   and  it   works   fine ,   both   printers   share  the   same    ink  cartridges

and   act  much  the   same .

Photo   quality  printing  on   glossy  paper   seems    as crisp  as   ever.

I saw your post for drivers for the Photosmart p1000.

Also if you can not update windows you could try-

First try to click the Windows icon, type services in the Search box, and then click or tap View Local Services. Scroll down to the Windows Installer. Startup type should be - Automatic, and Service Status should be - started

Restart the computer after this step and try installing again.

The only other possible work around would be to try downloading the XP driver software package, and then Run it in compatibility mode. Refer to the steps below, and let me know what you find out.

1. First you ll want to download the latest printing solution for Windows XP.  Tthe filename of the download should be 3511_enu_w2k_xp_release.exe.

2. Run the download to extract the files, and then click cancel on the installation screen when it appears.

3. Open the Photosmart folder which should be extracted to C: temp photosmart, and then right click on the setup.exe file, selecting Properties.

4. Click on the Compatibility tab, check the Run this program in compatibility mode for checkbox and select Windows XP Service Pack 3.   Click OK and run that file.

Note: You may get a few error box windows and you may have to click on the Skip button when it asks you to power on your printer or connect the USB cord but it should install the driver and the printer solution software.

Say Thanks by clicking the Kudos Star in the post that helped you.

Free HP Printer Driver Downloads. More often than not, people tend to misplace printer drivers and software that in the event that a new printer installation is.

I had no problem using the Vista 64 bit driver with my 1012 when I was running Windows 7 Beta, but since the new RC release the driver do not work anymore.

Some people suggest installing driver in compatibility mode, but this does not seem possible with the driver for the 1012 since there is no setup packaged with the drivers.

Driver for vista x64 are located here: en cc us prodTypeId 18972 prodSeriesId 377934 prodNameId 306510 swEnvOID 2100 swLang 8 mode 2 taskId 135 swItem lj-67501-1

I have also tried the 32 bit, and the driver for the 1018 with no success

Is there any compatibility list for windows 7 from HP, as there was one for vista a few years back.

I have had several emails on installing the HP Laserjet 1012 as a HP Laserjet 1015 with the Zenographics, Inc. driver using Windows 7. Here are the detailed instructions: go to Devices Printers Add a Printer Add Local Printer Use existing Port Dot4_001 Generic Install Printer Manufacturer HP Scroll down to HP Laserjet 1015 You will find two 1015 s, Microsoft and Zenographics, Inc Use HP 1015 Zenographics, Inc. Next Check on replace current driver Printer Name Whatever you want to call it Next Install Printer. Before I started, I removed the HP 1012 installation to clear the slate. Note: Every once in a while the printer will give you an error message saying that this is an unsupported personality, or words to that effect. Just turn off the printer and when you turn it back on again, it will work once more. I understand that it is caused by the printer going into a graphics mode if you are printing certain things that it considers graphics and then will not print normal text. Again, I am not a computer genus and I am sure that a lot of guys out there could explain the why s a lot better that I can. With that being said, my printer works just fine about 95 of the time. Contact HP and let them know how you feel about your printer NOTbeing supported using Windows 7. This link  is not  the driver for HP 1012 Laser Jet/Windows 7, 64 bit.    It s for HP 1020-1022 printer.

And if this driver works, than what happens when windows 7 downloads the updates.  There is one user here who said that he had trouble with the this driver after the updates.  See Below:

Compatibility:  Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit, Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition, Microsoft Windows XP x64

System requirements:  This download is for use on Windows Vista 64bit. It is intended for first time installation of the HP LaserJet 1020-1022 printer driver via a USB connection.

If you are upgrading the print driver, use the HP LaserJet 1020-1022 Driver package rather than this Plug and Play Package.

Description:  The Plug and Play Bundle provides basic printing functions.

Enhancements:  Windows 7 Compatible

payip, you will need to download the Vista Host Based Driver.  I would google - hp 1012 Vista Host Based Driver 32 - for 32bit Windows 7 or - hp 1012 Vista Host Based Driver 64 - for 64bit Windows 7.   This is a BASIC driver so there is not any setup or. exe executable to click on.  It is zipped, however double click on the Vista Host Based Driver you just downloaded and put it in a folder you have to create such as C: HP1012 or C: temp.  Know the location of the folder.

Know you have to attached the HP printer to your computer first.  If it has already been attached without a driver installation prompt, then it is in your Devices and Printers area as a Unspecified Device   Click Add Printer, for the port choose USB001 if that is not taken up by any other USB Printer, if so choose USB002, USB003 and so on   If USB00x is not showing up, choose DOT4.  Click NEXT and you have a button that says, HAVE DISK.  Click on HAVE DISK and point it to the VIsta Host Based Driver folder you just created after downloading it.

If you chose DOT4, then apply the workaround in thread 3 of this forum.  NOTE: you may have to Add Printer, Choose a port and click on WINDOWS UPDATE and let it update Windows 7 with more driver support.

As another way to update DOT4 to USB Printing Support you can go to Device Manager and then hit the on Universal Serial Bus controllers toward the bottom and you will see a Device with DOT4 HP Printer 1012 or something similiar.   Right click on it, go to properties, click update driver, choose Browse my computer for  driver software and two options of DOT4 and USB Printing Support should appear.  Choose USB Printing Support and finish it out.

Regarding Duplexing, I don t use that feature.  You can change it in Printing Preferences, but I believe you will need to manually flip the page s with the setting ON with the Vista Host Based Driver.

In all cases, it appeared that the driver was accepted.  HOWEVER, whenever I print a test page, the printer queue shows an Error-Printing.  Nothing prints and there are no other indications.  The Windows 7 troubleshooter finds no problems either.

I would highly speculate you have a hardware problem.  Hold down the green button on the laserject 1012 for at least 3 seconds to see if it prints a test page.  If it doesn t, replace the printer.

If it does print a test page holding the green button for 3 seconds, check cables and USB ports on the computer with another USB device like a thumb drive or mouse.   Some cheaper computers like only the bottom USB port closest to the motherboard as they maybe the only powered USB port on the motherboard.

If no USB Ports work, look into a PCI USB Card as they are cheap and they have plenty of power for a printer.

Also, it can be the USB Port on the 1012 Printer s end.  If that is the case, replace the printer.

There s a problem with using the LJ 1015 fix on my computer - my Windows 7 computer doesn t have an HP LaserJet 1015 driver.  The lowest-numbered LJ driver is 2200 Series PCL5.

Any other suggestions on how to get my 1012 running again.

Here s how it worked for me using windows 7 x64, starting with the printer plugged in via USB, and recognized as HP 1012, but sorted under unspecified in the devices printers list and not working.

Unzip the driver lj1010serieshb-vista64.zip should be downloadable from HP if you google that filename, then:

1. Control panel / devices:  add a printer  -   add a local printer  -   use an existing port:, USB001 virtual printer port for USB

2. Update printer list by clicking Windows Update button

3. Select manufacturer: HP, printers: hp laserjet 3055 PCL5 HP

4. Click have disk and open the hpc1015w.inf driver file

5. Select Hp LaserJet 1012 HB in the choose your printer list that pops up

6. Type a name for this dummy printer something other than what you want your printer to actually be called.  The print drivers are now installed, but they aren t yet associated with the printer hardware.

7. Go to the laserjet 1012 icon sorted under unspecified in devices this is your actual printer, which isn t associated with working drivers yet.  Right click - properties - hardware tab - properties - driver tab - uninstall.  The printer should be removed from the devices list.

8. Unplug your printer s usb cable and plug it back in.

9. The printer should pop back up in the unspecified list, then the driver should be associated with it automatically and it will move to the printers list; it should now be working.

Ask the drivers to install my HP LaserJet 1010 printer on a PC with Windows 7

Thanks to those who have given us the solution to this most difficult problem.  I am utterly amazed that HP does not make this information available on their printer driver website.  Do they have moderators who read and respond to these forums.

This thread is over ten pages long and goes back into 2009.  Shows just how many HP LaserJet 1012 users there are out there who were are  disgusted with HP for not providing the solution to this problem.  Sure would have made life easier for lots of people..

This HP LaserJet 1012 is one of the best printers I ve ever used.  I ve had it on line for many years and it just keeps on going.  I was going to to buy a new printer today as after upgrading from Win XP to Windows 7 32-bit Professional, I must have a reliable laser printer.

It took several iterations using the excellent information posted several places in this forum, but then it worked.  Since I have a 32-bit version of windows 7, I had to be sure I downloaded the 32-bit version of the Vista driver.  Look for the link above.  When I got to the last step I had the choice of hp LaserJet 1012 HB, 1010 HP or 1015 HB.  Someone said above that it doesn t matter which you choose as they are all the same driver.  the 1012 HB worked for me and it is the right name not sure what the HB means, but don t really care.

When it is time to replace this printer.  I probably won t buy another HP.  I recently bought a Samsung ML-2525W and put it on my wife s computer.  It comes with both wired and wireless networking,, as well as a USB 2.0 Interface.  It works without a hitch.  It seems to be better quality than the newer inexpensive HP laser printers and about the same price.  It came right up under Windows 7 without any problems.  I have it networked to this computer, but since I m a floor above her office, I only used it until I could get this HP LaserJet 1012 working.  I almost bought another one this morning.

Thanks again to those who posted the solution.  It does work.

Just went through the sign up process so I could thank you.  I had my 1012 working with the 3055 driver for a while.  Then it started doing the Unsupported Personality: PCL nonsense.  YHour procedure worked perfectly so far.  It is back up and running.  Hopefully it will stay that way.  Thanks again.

Incredible. Your work fixed my problem. Thanks very much for posting this very helpful fix.

I just read through all 12 pages of posts for this item.  Unfortunately it appears that not everyone has because the easiest suggested solution to the can t get my Laserjet 1012 to work with WINDOWS 7 problem which is real and is very very irritating works for a while but then fails and/or does not work with some kinds of documents documents that are images which is most new PDFs.

The solution that is unreliable works and then doesn t/doesn t work on some kinds of documents is as follows:  manually press ADD PRINTER, choose DOT4 for the port. For the driver, choose the built in Windows 7 HP Laserjet 3055 PCL5.

I am still trying to figure out the following more complex solution and would appreciate feedback on whether this one works reliable over time and with PDF documents created with newer versions of ADOBE.

1. Control panel / devices: add a printer - add a local printer - use an existing port:, USB001 virtual printer port for USB

9. The printer should pop back up in the unspecified list, then the driver should be associated with it automatically and it will move to the printers list; it should now be working

Meanwhile, since I wasted a lot of time with this already, I ll use my old computer with the 1012 to print until my 1012 cartridges run out and save up to buy a Samsung ML-2525W or just about any other non-HP printer.  This should not be happening.

I have original 1010/1012/1015 Install disk if anyone needs a copy.

Worked for me to hit the windows update button during the printer install to get a complete printer list apparently Win7 does not have the full list at installation and choosing the Laserjet 1015.

OMG You guys are geniuses.  I ve been screwing with this problem for over a month now and per your suggestion, I tried tricking my PC into believing that I m using a Laserjet 3055 PLCS vice my tried and tested  Laserjet 1012 and it s now printing.  Thanks so very much.

This network system does work.

New believer and you can teach and old dog new tricks smile,

Thank you very much. That worked for me.

I have an Officejet L7800 all in one.  I noticed in your list of Windows 7 drivers that there was a Windows 7 driver available for download yet when I went to the driver download area I didn t see one.  What gives.

I had to buy a new laptop Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit when my old one died.  I already had the OfficeJet Pro L7780.  When I downloaded the new and latest drivers OJProL7X00_Full_14.exe, the installation went fine for the wireless configuration.  I could print wirelessly.

Then I plugged in the USB cable and the operating system won t recognize it.  It says the device has malfunctioned.  I can plug in that same USB cable to a different Windows XP laptop and it works just fine.

I should be able to use either the wireless option or the USB option depending on my situation.  It would appear that the USB drivers were not loaded onto the new laptop so it does not recognize it.  If I go back and try to add software or a new device USB, it doesn t recognize it and won t go any further with the installation.

What can I do to get the USB option to work without losing my wireless option.

I know its an older printer and they arent making updated drivers for it, but is there any work around. Are there some drivers out there that will atleast give me basic print functions back. I can t see buying a new printer when this one works perfect still and prints great. Thank you for your time, any info is appreciated.

Those arent available in the list.

If these are not showing up go to Add Printer and when the list comes up select Windows Update.   It will take several minutes with no indication of progress, but once it completes there will be many more printers including the Deskjet 970 csi.

OK - same problem. Different user.  I have loaded both drivers. I am using the USB cable also.  I have played with the DOT4 port and also changed it to the USB001: but it does not seem to stick and reverts. When I change to USB001 and reboot since the driver does not seem to load I would have thought Win7 would locate it and load it then. It does not. Then it WIN 7 reverts back on the ports asking me to use the unidentified device supposedly on the LPT1 and I haven t seen one of those cables in 5 years and prefer not to have to buy one - but will if there is no other work around.   Am I dealing with a cache memory thing. USB driver seqencing issue. Do I need to unload everything, reboot and load it back in a certain sequence on the driver, port selection and then adding the printer live to make it work.. Help. The P1100 is a trusty old printer my wife loves.
